A Lifelong Journey of Transformation with Tomas Eastes

I’m Thomas Eastes, a lifelong student of human awareness, consciousness, spirit, and energy expansion.

I have studied human consciousness for over 50 years. I have studied Cognitive Neuroscience and trained with Christian Mystics, Indigenous Shamans, and Out-of-Body technology. An insatiable appetite for greater Awareness has guided me.

A Quest for Awareness and Connection

At 17, I experienced something profound—what I call my mountaintop experience. For two entire years, I was living in a state of spiritual clarity where prayers were answered immediately, and my extrasensory perception was heightened. I could sense when the phone was about to ring and could even point to where lightning would strike during a storm. I felt as though I was floating, my connection to the spiritual world was so intense.

Despite this, my early career choices were not directly spiritual. I considered missionary work, the ministry, or even becoming a forest ranger. But life led me down a different path. I earned my Master of Business Administration (MBA) and explored various professions—business broker, financial analyst, investment manager, event producer, and even general contractor. While these roles fulfilled my worldly responsibilities, my spiritual quest was always at the forefront of my thoughts.

The Challenge of Raising Bryan

In my early twenties, my first wife and I began an incredible, humbling journey—raising Bryan, our foster son. Bryan had severe and profound mental disabilities and was non-verbal. He couldn’t take care of any of his personal needs, and at 12 years old, he came to us on what was supposed to be a temporary basis. But our commitment to him lasted 13 years.

Bryan could walk and make sweet noises, and he loved to eat. Music brought him joy, and he would do this twisting and turning hop that reminded me of an Indigenous dance move—I called it the “Zuni Hop.” When he did it, he seemed to soar with his great spirit.

Bryan, however, was unaware that his body was part of him, and we had to care for his every need. He grew tall, reaching about 6’5″, and would often greet random elderly ladies at the grocery store by gently placing his hands on their shoulders and touching his forehead to theirs. In wealthy areas, we were shunned for bringing “imperfection” into their space. But in lower-income neighborhoods, we were embraced, and Bryan’s spirit was recognized and appreciated.

After a year and a half of tireless efforts, Bryan learned to use the bathroom and sign for his needs. It was a monumental achievement, just like when he learned to throw and catch a ball. He and I would play this game—each of us tossing a ball to one another at the same time. It felt like a beautiful, two-person juggling act that Bryan adored.

However, Bryan also had violent tantrums, where he would bang his head with such force that it terrified us. He grew fast, and preventing him from harming himself meant I often had to pin him down and hold him, exhausting myself in the process. These moments, though fleeting, required immense patience, love, and strength.

Through it all, I learned to embrace humility in its deepest form. We lost our social life for those 13 years, and the constant caretaking—cleaning, attending to his every need—humbled me. It was an exhausting journey, but one that brought me closer to my spiritual studies. I dove deep into the teachings of Catholic mystics, Toltec shamanism, and countless other spiritual traditions.

Bryan stayed with us until he was 25, by which time our son and daughter had been born and raised alongside him for several years. Raising Bryan shaped my perspective on life and love forever.

A Journey Through Loss and Despair

At age 60, I entered the most challenging period of my life. In one year, my sister went into a coma after emergency surgery, and we had to make the heart-wrenching decision to take her off life support. Then, lightning struck our home, causing a fire that destroyed a lifetime of memories, business files, and cherished possessions. To make matters worse, we lost all our retirement savings and suffered significant real estate losses.

Within 12 months, my world had collapsed. With debt piling up and nothing left, I found myself counting change, on the verge of bankruptcy. My self-worth plummeted. I began to believe I was worth more dead than alive, and my wife had to return to work after retiring 15 years earlier.

I spiraled into self-loathing, compounded by addiction. For a while, I couldn’t even summon a glimpse of self-compassion. My despair led me to cocaine use, and I became trapped in a cycle of self-destruction. Despite all my spiritual training—leading monks and nuns in prayer, teaching spirituality, and studying consciousness—I had reached rock bottom.

But then, I remembered: One day at a time. I returned to daily meditation and the practice of gratitude. Slowly, I began to rebuild my life.
